with a special degree in Physics with Mathematics and later, received the Post Graduate Diploma in Ports andShipping Administration from the University of Wales Institute of Science and Technology (UWIST) Cardiff. |

He started his career as a lecturer in Sri Lankan Universities, but after a few years, decided to put his knowledge into actual practice.

He served 10 years with the Ceylon Shipping Corporation, the National Carrier of Sri Lanka, almost from the inception and was responsible for feasibility studies for containerization in 1979/80. |

Mr. Gunawardena also served prestigious Companies such as John Keells Holdings and Delmege Forsyth & Company for further 10 years before embarking on his own ventures in 1992. These two companies represented large shipping lines: P&O, OCCL, Mitsui OSK, Sea Consortium (Feeder in the sub continent). |

P & I Correspondence including vessel operations at Ports of Colombo, Galle and Trincomalee. He then joined the Colombo office of a Leading International Agency network, (under the same group) at it’s inception as the first Manager and then promoted to General Manager. He was fully responsible for developing the Agency activities in Sri Lanka for this International Network with overall responsibility for both Colombo and Galle offices from its infancy stages at Market entry to a fully fledged matured Agency House in the Sri Lankan market. He has traveled extensively to all the Major shipping hubs like Greece, London, Norway, Singapore, Korea etc. on familiarization and business promotion tours.

He resigned from this company in order to take up an overseas assignment which he completed and returned to Colombo and joined Prudential Shipping as Director/GM in January 1998. |

In all he has over 25 years of experience in all aspects of the Shipping Industry and has received many commendations from Principals for excellent cost effective service. |
